2018 Salzburg Festival:

Concentrating every conceivable passion, the concert features Bernd Alois Zimmermann’s Trumpet Concerto, entitled Nobody knows de trouble I see – a protest against racism – and Mahler’s Second, ‘Resurrection’ Symphony: ‘I shall die in order to live!’

Tchaikovsky’s powerful concerto receives an energetic reading from Barenboim and the uncanny West-Eastern Divan Orchestra, but the true star here is Lisa Batiashvili, who treats the mighty work’s languid lines and towering climaxes with moving reverence and transcendental skill.

Night Music with Jan Lisiecki

In his piano recital at the Imperial Hall at the Würzburg Residence, the young Canadian pianist Jan Lisiecki, brings the spirits of the night to life.

Chopin’s dreamy Nocturnes, for example, Schumann’s dainty “Nachtstücke” or Ravel’s spinechilling cycle “Gaspard de la nuit”, populated by sinister figures and dark premonitions.
