John Williams has adapted his familiar themes for solo violin and orchestra.

IDOMENEO for the Screen

Peter Sellars is the stage director of Salzburg Festival's 2019 IDOMENEO production, but he also directs the screen adaption of the opera himself.

Discovered through the viewfinder of camera 1 in the audience: German Chancellor Angela Merkel, together with her husband Joachim Sauer.

This production of Idomeneo sees the return of the powerful tenor Russell Thomas and the incomparable musicAeterna choir. Once again, the rage and desperation of refugees, violence, trauma, unfinished wars and now environmental degradation surge through the beautiful music.

This overwhelming masterpiece by the impatient and supremely gifted young Mozart raises urgent questions related to climate change and its impact on oceans and populations: are we cutting off a future by being in denial about pollution and global warming? Is a younger generation being sacrificed by a previous generation which is refusing to deal with reality in the present tense? Is there a younger generation that is now ready for leadership?

Alondra de la Parra has taken the world’s concert halls by storm. Born in 1980 in New York, she decided early on she wanted to become a conductor. Her great dream has taken her on a long journey - and it is not over yet, by any means.

Alondra de la Parra’a roots are in Mexico – but her orchestras and her audiences are to be found all over the world. Alondra de la Parra is one of those trailblazers who has made history by being appointed the first conductor and music director of the Queensland Symphony Orchestra in 2017.

Martin Grubinger rocks the 2019 New Year’s Concert in Salzburg

The traditional New Year’s Concert with the Bläserphilharmonie Mozarteum Salzburg features the “Mozarteum Percussion Suite” with excerpts from Shostakovich, Sieff, Cerha, Dorman, Cangelosi, Corigliano, Camilo and Abe.

The symphonic wind orchestra welcomes 2019 with its traditional New Year’s Concert on Jannuary 6^th in the Felsenreitschule. This year’s concert’s theme “Sound of the Danubian Monarchy”( “Klang der Donaumonarchie”) stands for wind music of the highest standard, which is synonymous with the Bläserphilharmonie Mozarteum Salzburg.

The repertoire includes waltzes, marches, czardas, polkas, and mazurkas – musical styles from around the Austrian-Hungarian empire which reflect a special kind of multinational identity. The programme also features a percussion concert by the Vienna Philharmonic Bruno Hartl and the world’s leading percussionist Martin Grubinger, “a master of the high-speed chase” (New York Times).
