Johannes Brahms’ ”Ein Deutsches Requiem” is a masterpiece of German Romantic repertoire, reflecting the composer’s own experience of life and mourning on the death of his mother in 1865. It stands outside the settings of the Latin liturgical Requiem Mass and, rather than being a requiem in which „the souls of the dead are prayed for”, it is a mass of consolation to „the people who are suffering”, based on texts of Old and New Testaments.
Conductor Christian Thielemann is in the prime of his career and has never been more sought-after than now. In the upcoming live production he leads “his” orchestra, the Münchner Philharmoniker, and the Chor des Bayerischen Rundfunks. Highly acclaimed soloists Christine Schäfer and Christian Gerhaher complete the exceptional line-up.
